To be ranked, a haunt needs at least 25 Google reviews, which keeps one lucky weekend from vaulting a newcomer to the top. The old Nevada State Prison in Carson City holds three haunts, with food trucks, fire pits, and a 21+ bar out in the yard. It bills itself as Northern Nevada's largest haunted attraction and holds the area's highest Google rating.

Yes, and Andelin Family Farm in Sparks is the place to start. Its daytime fall festival is built for families, with a pumpkin patch, a corn maze, farm animals, and pony rides, and nothing about it is scary. After dark, its Corn Creepers haunt is the best first real haunt in the area for brave older kids, and a glow necklace tells the actors to go easy on whoever wears it. BooVille in Sparks runs scare-free indoor trick-or-treating for little ones.
